AMENDMENT
In April 2017, this chapter links to the Foreign Exchange Visits Guidance and Procedure.
The Government’s response to the Children's Safeguarding Review 1998 included a commitment to work with language schools to develop a code of practice for those bringing children from overseas. To date, no such code of practice has emerged and all professionals in contact with these schools or their foreign students need to be mindful of the fact the schools are unregulated and there may be few (if any) checks completed on host families. In particular, if a student under 16 remains in a host family for 28 days or more, the private fostering regulations become applicable (see Children Living Away from Home (including Children and Families living in Temporary Accommodation) Procedure).
