This chapter has been updated with a new Section 12, Historical Abuse. Information has been added with reference to 'peer on peer' abuse. The definition of Abuse has been expanded in line with that as identified in Working Together 2015 and Keeping Children Safe in Education 2016.

Children Missing from Education

This chapter has been amended to encompass the updated statutory guidance 'Children Missing Education' (DfE, September 2016). Section 1, Definition and Overview has been expanded to include an overview as well as the definition. Section 2, Risks has been updated to include some specific groups of children who are vulnerable. Section 3.1, Schools has been expanded to reflect the duties and requirements of schools and LAs. Links have been updated in the whole chapter.

Children Missing from Care, Home and Education

A link has been added to the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2016.

Domestic Violence and Abuse

A link has been added to Royal College of Nursing – Domestic Abuse: Professional Resources.

This provides links to websites and organisations providing relevant information and support to victims of domestic abuse.

Sexually Harmful Behaviour

This chapter has been updated with a revised definition of Harmful Sexual Behaviour and information regarding a continuum of sexual development as an aid to understanding sexual behaviour in children. Additional links to external guidance have also been added.

Trafficked Children

A link has been added to Modern Slavery: Duty to Notify (Home Office 2016) - factsheets and posters that explain what you need to do if you think someone has been a victim of modern slavery.

Underage Sexual Activity

A link has been added to Practice Guidance: Supporting Young People with HIV Testing and Prevention.

This practice guidance is for professionals who do not provide HIV testing, treatment or advice as part of their day-to-day work. It is primarily intended for those working outside health settings, such as social workers or voluntary sector practitioners.

This policy is for anyone who may encounter a woman who conceals the fact that they are pregnant or where a professional has a suspicion that a pregnancy is being concealed or denied.

Safeguarding Children and Young People from Sexual Exploitation – Statutory Guidance Links have been updated to updated statutory guidance.
The International Child Abduction and Contact Unit The link to the International Child Abduction and Contact Unit (ICACU) now includes information with regards to the ICACU request for co-operation form and guidance (GOV.UK). This form is to be used by local authority staff to ask the authorities in another country for information or assistance in a child protection case. The guidance should be read prior to completing the form.
