REGULATIONS AND STANDARDS

England: STANDARD 6 - Promoting good health and wellbeing

STANDARD 2 - Promoting diversity, a positive identity and potential through individualised care

Regulation 11 - Promotion of welfare
Regulation 20 - Health needs of children

Wales: Standard 16: Provision and Preparation of Meals; Standard 17: Good Health and Wellbeing. See: Children's Homes Regulations and Standards (Wales) 2002

Homes managers must ensure that arrangements exist in the home to account for the nutritional and dietary needs of the children looked after there.

These arrangements should be contained in the home's Staff Handbook and summarised in the Children's Guide; or may be outlined in Placement Plans for individual children.

In particular, the following should be addressed:

  1. the times and associated procedures for meals, including washing up arrangements;
  2. whether and, if so, how children will be encouraged and supported to help with menu planning, budgeting, purchase and preparation of meals;
  3. whether and, if so, how children will be taught skills in preparation for independence.
