5.2.8 Psychotherapy

The following provision will not normally be available in a short term placement, but there may be times when a one off session might be required.

Individual psychotherapy and assessment is an adjunct to the work done with a child in the home. These services may be undertaken only with the expressed consent of the child's own local authority.

CastleCare contracts with qualified outside consultants to provide individual psychotherapy and counselling, staff consultation and individual assessments. The consultant's work with the care staff in the preparation of individual treatment plans which include the formulation of short term and long term goals and strategies for meeting the child's identified physical, emotional, mental and social needs.

Whilst consultant/child confidentiality is safeguarded, the therapist advises the care staff on the appropriate care of any individual child. It is explained to the child by the therapist that those who look after them look to the therapist for help in understanding them and how to look after them better. It is also explained to the child that the only exception to this general rule is in accordance with the rules on disclosure of abuse and neglect.

The child should be made aware that the care staff are in agreement with the sessions; that the therapist is a non-judgmental person and that the sessions are primarily for his or her benefit. The content and direction of the sessions is determined by the child.

Where advisable, the child should be accompanied by a staff member of the home, but it should also be recognised that many young people and children benefit from being escorted by an understanding person who is known to the child and is not a member of the care staff.

The therapists may also provide reports for Court, planning meetings and statutory reviews if requested.
